TV & Podcast Quick Start Guide
These steps are for once cameras are set up.
Formal training is required before you are permitted to set-up the cameras.
By default the Studio 2 Axia Mixing Desk will be set to either:
‘A: On Air’ or ‘B: Record’ Modes
The desk will need switching to ‘C: Shock TV’ mode.
To do this, go inside the studio. The desk should look like this:
We can see that profile B (Record) is selected.
To change this, press the ‘PROFILE’ button.
Turn the ‘STUDIO’ dial to select ‘C: Shock TV’ on the control display.
Press down on the ‘STUDIO’ dial to select the profile.
The desk should then look like this:
You will notice all the fader lights on the Axia Desk inside the studio will turn off. Do not worry, this is meant to happen as you have moved control to the Axia Desk in the gallery area.
The Axia Desk in the gallery area should now look like this:
On this desk you will see four microphones (Pod 1, Pod 2, Pod 3 & Pod 4), ‘Office USB’ (to plug into a laptop), ‘Zetta A’ & ‘Zetta B’ (for live content from Studio 2), and ‘S1 PGM’ (for monitoring live output from Studio 1).
For TV & podcast content in Studio 2, we use lav mics - which clip to peoples clothing.
There are 4 lav mics, each placed on the arms of the two sofas.
They are labelled from left to right. With ‘Pod 1’ on the left-hand side of the left sofa.
Push the faders for the microphones being used all the way to the top, and make sure they are switched to on:
If the presenters are too loud or quiet you can adjust the microphone gain:
Turn the ‘OPTIONS’ dial at the top of the fader either clockwise or anti-clockwise to increase or decrease the gain.
You will notice that the fader display will now show the current gain level for that microphone.
Adjust the gain until all the presenters are talking at a reasonable volume, you might need to change this during a programme.
The multiview (director’s view) of the studio can be loaded from the ‘Studio 2 Ingest PC’.
To load the multiview, open ‘OBS Studio’ (Open Broadcast Software) - the icon looks like this:
Once OBS is open, the multiview should appear fullscreen on the left-hand screen and windowed on the right-hand screen, like this:
If the left-hand screen and the preview are blank OR frozen:
Double click ‘ATEM Input’ in the ‘Sources’ window:
Then click, ‘Deactivate’ and then ‘Activate’ - this will reset the view.
Then select ‘OK’ to close the pop-up
2. If the multiview has not opened in fullscreen on the left-hand monitor:
Right click on the multiview preview, hover over ‘Open preview projector’ and select ‘PL2283H’:
This is how the ATEM should be set up at the start of a broadcast.
Make sure that ‘MIC 1’ is set to ‘ON’ - this is how the audio from the Axia Audio desk gets into the ATEM.
Make sure that all of the HDMI Audio Channels are switched off and make sure that none of the ‘AFV’ buttons are illuminated
These can both be found directly above the numbered camera buttons.
When ‘CUT’ is selected - the cameras will switch directly without a transition.
If you want a transition, select ‘AUTO’.
This will then allow you to choose a transition from the ‘EFFECT’ pane.
You can also select the duration you want the effect to be.
‘MIX’ IS A STANDARD FADE
‘FTB’ (fade to black) will fade the programme feed to a black slate.
To record, the black and orange harddrive should already be plugged into the ATEM
ALL CABLES SHOULD REMAIN PLUGGED IN
To start a recording, press the ‘REC’ button.
To stop recording, press the ‘OFF’ button.
The ‘DISK’ status light shows the USB status, if green - all is good. If the indicator is YELLOW or RED it will not record.
The ATEM must be connected to the internet via the white ethernet cable for Livestreaming.
Press ‘On Air’ to start sending the ATEM Programme feed to restream.io (a remote control software for sending streams to broadcast).
Control of when and where we are live is done through Restream and NOT the ATEM directly. Only trusted members should be logging into Shock TV.
If the ‘On Air’ button is blinking, the ATEM cannot connect to the internet.
There is more detailed information on USB disc space, stream quality and duration visible on the multiview:
The TV and mood lighting in Studio 2 can be controlled from the gallery.
This is done by using a ‘Streamdeck’ that sits next to the ATEM on the gallery desk.
The Streamdeck is connected to the ‘Studio 2 Internet PC’ inside the studio.
Simply select the tile corresponding to the show you are producing, and the lights and TV screen will change automatically.
To ensure the right graphics show up on the TV, make sure that the ATEM’s ‘VIDEO OUT’ (sometimes referred to as ‘BUS 2’) is set to ‘8’ as shown to the left.
From here, you can also set any of the 8 inputs to display on the Studio TV. This is useful for interviews or explainers.
Make sure studio TV is turned on
Make sure OBS is open on the ‘Studio 2 Internet PC’
Make sure OBS is ‘projecting’ to ‘DSGI TV’
Follow the steps in STEP 4 troubleshooting for how to do this
We have ‘In Ear Monitors’ (IEMs) in the studio so that presenters can hear the programme output - this is especially important during SHOCK SPORT so they can hear Zetta.
The volume for the IEMs is controlled from inside the studio.
Make sure ‘PGM 2’ is selected from the monitoring source panel on the Axia Desk.
Use the ‘Headphones’ dial to adjust the volume until the presenter is comfortable.
If the output is still too quiet, there is a headphone amp located under the desk.
Adjust ‘OUTPUT 4’ until the presenter is comfortable.
You might want to lower the volume of outputs 1-3 (the radio area headphones) to avoid feedback.
The Talkback Microphone lives on the Gallery desk by the two monitors.
The ‘Talkback’ fader must be up and on for the gallery mic to be heard in the presenters’ IEMs
The ‘PGM 2’ light should already be illuminated at the top of the fader.
Make sure the ‘PGM 1’ light is NOT illuminated, this is what goes to air.
Once the fader is up and on, the talkback connection is open.
If the gallery team want to talk to the presenters, slide the switch on the BACK of the microphone UP to turn it on, slide it back DOWN to turn it off.
The gallery headphones are attached to the 4-channel headphone mixer on the desk in-between the Axia desk and the ATEM
The ‘INPUT' should be plugged into the 'HEADPHONE OUT' of the ATEM
The four dials should normally be set to 12 o'clock
Once you have finished recording the show. Put the Axia desk back into the profile ‘B: Record’. This will make it ready for the next people using the studio.
Make sure the cameras are packed away properly in the studio itself. This is detailed in the “Setting up Cameras” guide.
